Fix Chrome blocking Hāpara: pop-ups, cookies, extensions, firewall and allowlist settings Follow
This article helps teachers and administrators fix Chrome settings that may block Hāpara from loading or working correctly.
Who this is for
Both teachers and administrators
Summary
If Hāpara is blocked in Chrome, the most common causes are browser extensions, blocked pop-ups, third-party cookie settings, firewall or web filter rules, or managed Chrome policies. Start with the quick tests below, then follow the section that matches what you find.
In this article:
- Quick tests (for teachers)
- Check for Chrome extensions blocking Hāpara
- Allow Hāpara pop-ups in Chrome
- Check managed Chrome policies
- Check firewall, web filter and network allowlist settings
- Additional tips
Quick tests for teachers
- Open Chrome in an Incognito window.
- Try the same Hāpara task again.
- If Hāpara works in Incognito, a Chrome extension, cookie setting or pop-up setting may be blocking Hāpara.
- Try another Chrome profile or device, if available.
- If Hāpara works in another profile or device, the issue is likely connected to the original Chrome profile or browser settings.
Check for Chrome extensions blocking Hāpara
Use these steps if Hāpara works in Incognito or another Chrome profile.
- In Chrome, select the Extensions puzzle icon.
- Select Manage extensions.
- Turn off all extensions.
- Open Hāpara again and test the same action.
- Turn extensions back on one at a time.
- Test Hāpara after each extension is turned on.
- If Hāpara stops working after an extension is turned on, that extension may be blocking Hāpara.
- Keep the extension turned off, or ask your administrator to allow Hāpara sites in that extension.
Administrator note: If the extension is managed by your school or district, review the extension policy or OU assignment in Google Admin console.
Allow Hāpara pop-ups in Chrome
Use these steps if Hāpara pages, tools or new tabs do not open.
- In Chrome, go to Settings.
- Select Privacy and security.
- Select Site settings.
- Select Pop-ups and redirects.
- Under Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects, select Add.
- Add these Hāpara sites:
*.hapara.com
*.teacherdashboard.com
*.mystudentdashboard.com
Open Hāpara again and test the same action.
You can also allow pop-ups from a Hāpara page by selecting the lock icon in the address bar, selecting Site settings, and changing Pop-ups and redirects to Allow.
Check third-party cookies for Hāpara
Use these steps if Hāpara login, Google file picker, embedded Google content or connected tools are not loading correctly.
- In Chrome, go to Settings.
- Select Privacy and security.
- Select Third-party cookies.
- As a quick test, choose Allow third-party cookies.
- Open Hāpara again and test the same action.
- If your school blocks third-party cookies by default, add exceptions for these Hāpara sites:
*.hapara.com
*.teacherdashboard.com
*.mystudentdashboard.com
Administrator note: Chrome Enterprise administrators can allow specific sites while still blocking third-party cookies globally. Review the BlockThirdPartyCookies and CookiesAllowedForUrls policies in Chrome management.
Check managed Chrome policies
Use this section if Chrome settings are greyed out or teachers cannot change pop-ups, cookies or extensions.
- Confirm whether the user is signed into a managed school Chrome profile.
- Check whether pop-ups, third-party cookies or extensions are controlled by policy.
- Review the user’s organizational unit in Google Admin console.
- Update the relevant Chrome policy if Hāpara is being blocked.
- Ask the user to restart Chrome and test Hāpara again.
If the setting is locked by your school or district, teachers will need an administrator to update the policy.
Check firewall, web filter and network allowlist settings
Use this section if Hāpara only fails on the school network or only when a web filter is active.
- Test Hāpara on a different network, such as a hotspot, if your school policy allows it.
- If Hāpara works on another network, review your firewall, DNS filter, proxy or web filter settings.
- Allow the required Hāpara and Google URLs for teachers and students.
- Allow websocket traffic, if your firewall or network software specifically allows this.
- Retest Hāpara from the school network.
- If your school uses a third-party filtering extension, allow Hāpara sites in that tool as well.
Additional tips
Update Chrome to the latest version by going to More, Help, then About Google Chrome.
Disable ad blockers, script blockers or privacy extensions on Hāpara sites if buttons, file pickers or real-time screens do not load.
Restart Chrome after changing browser, extension or policy settings.
If the issue continues, contact Hāpara Support and include the affected user, device type, Chrome version, network location and the action that is being blocked.
