Set up and use Kiosk Mode in Hāpara Hall Pass Follow
This article helps admins enable and manage Kiosk Mode and helps teachers pair a shared classroom device for student self-service passes.
Who this is for
Admins, School Leaders, Teachers and Students.
Summary
Kiosk Mode lets students create and return eligible Hall Passes from a shared device.
Admins can enable and manage Kiosk Mode for the school. Teachers and School Leaders can launch and pair eligible kiosk devices, and students use the paired kiosk to create and return available passes.
Only pass types configured for kiosk use should be presented to students.
Before you begin
- For admins: Confirm Hāpara Hall Pass is enabled and the school’s pass types are configured.
- For teachers: Have a shared classroom device ready and confirm the pass types you want to offer from the auto-approved list.
- For school leaders: Have the shared kiosk device available and confirm which eligible Hall Pass options students should be able to use.
- Only auto-approved pass types can be added to a kiosk. Passes that require approval are not shown as options.
- Recommendation: Turn off the ability for students to request passes from their own devices if you want them only using the kiosk, or to ask their teachers for a pass.
For admins: Enable and manage Kiosk Mode
Admins control whether Kiosk Mode is available at a school and can monitor active kiosk sessions.
- Sign in to the Hāpara Admin Console with an account that can manage Hall Pass.
- Select Hall Pass from the navigation menu.
- Select the school you want to manage.
- Open the Kiosk Mode settings.
- Turn on Kiosk Mode for the school.
- Review active kiosk sessions by location and teacher.
- If necessary, select an active session and follow the prompts to end it remotely.
When Kiosk Mode is turned off, teachers at that school will not see the option to set up a kiosk.
For Teachers and School Leaders: Pair a kiosk device
Pairing connects a shared device with the appropriate Hall Pass experience.
- Open Hāpara Hall Pass on your teacher device.
- Select Kiosk.
- Select Pair a new kiosk.
- Choose the class that will use the kiosk.
- On the shared classroom device, open the kiosk page provided by your school.
- Note the one-time pairing code shown on the shared device.
- Enter the matching code in the Enter device pairing code field on your teacher device.
- Under Select kiosk passes, choose the auto-approved pass types students should see.
- Select Start kiosk mode.
- On the shared device, select Unlock kiosk if prompted.
The shared device is now paired with the selected class and is ready for students to use. It remains paired until you exit the kiosk session.
What students do at the kiosk
Students can request and return passes without the teacher creating or ending each pass.
-
On the shared kiosk device, the student selects their destination from the approved list.
-
The student receives a timed pass with a countdown.
-
When the student returns, they confirm their return at the kiosk.
The activity appears live on the teacher’s Hall Pass dashboard. If a pass goes beyond its allowed time, Hall Pass marks it as overdue automatically.
Troubleshooting
Teachers cannot see the Kiosk option
- Ask a Hall Pass admin to confirm that Kiosk Mode is enabled for the correct school.
- Confirm that you are signed in with the correct school-managed account.
- Confirm that you have access to the class you want to pair.
A pass type is missing from the kiosk setup
- Confirm that the pass type is active and available to the selected class.
- Confirm that the pass type is set to auto-approve. Pass types requiring approval cannot be offered through Kiosk Mode.
- Setting that allows students to apply for the pass may be disabled.
- Ask a Hall Pass admin to review the pass configuration if you cannot change it.
The pairing code does not work
- Check that the code on the shared device matches the code entered on the teacher device.
- Generate a new one-time code and try pairing again.
- Keep both devices connected to the internet while pairing.
A kiosk should no longer be available
- Teachers can exit the kiosk session from Hall Pass.
- Admins can end an active kiosk session remotely from the Hāpara Admin Console.
Additional tips
- Place the shared device where students can access it without disrupting instruction.
- Choose only the pass types students should be able to request independently.
- Check the teacher dashboard for active or overdue passes.
- End the kiosk session when the device is no longer being used by that class.
Who cannot manage a kiosk
Location Approvers and Hall Monitors do not have Kiosk Mode management permissions.
If you need to enable or manage Kiosk Mode, contact a Hall Pass Admin or School Leader.
