Set up Encounter prevention in Hall Pass Follow
This article helps admins set up Encounter prevention rules and explains what staff and students see when a pass is blocked.

Summary
Encounter prevention lets admins create pairs of students who should not have active Hall Passes at the same time. This helps schools prevent planned meetups, bullying, misuse of facilities, or other situations where two students should not be in the hallways together.
When one student in a conflict pair already has an active pass, the other student may be blocked from creating a pass. Depending on your school’s settings, staff may be able to override the warning when creating a pass.
What is Encounter prevention?
Encounter prevention is a Hall Pass safety setting that helps prevent two specific students from being in the hallways at the same time.
Admins create 1:1 conflict pairs. Each pair includes exactly two students. If one student in the pair has an active Hall Pass, Hall Pass checks that rule when someone tries to create another pass for the second student.
This can help schools reduce situations where students may pre-arrange to meet in a hallway, restroom, gym, library, or another school location.
Why schools use Encounter prevention
Schools may use Encounter prevention to help:
- Prevent bullying or harassment
- Reduce misuse of bathrooms or shared facilities
- Prevent students from arranging meetups during class time
- Support student safety plans
- Give staff a warning before creating a pass that may create a concern
How admins add a conflict pair
- Open Hall Pass.
- Go to the school or Hall Pass settings area.
- Select Encounter prevention.
- In the Add conflict pair section, search for Student A by name or email.
- Search for Student B by name or email.
- Option to add notes regarding the pair for admins or school leaders that can configure Hall pass. (Notes are not visible to other teachers).
- Select Save pair.
The two students are now added as a conflict pair.
Important details for admins
Each conflict pair must include exactly two students.
To keep one student apart from multiple students, create a separate pair for each combination.
To keep three or more students apart, add multiple conflict pairs.
Encounter prevention only applies when one student in the pair already has an active Hall Pass.
The feature does not replace staff supervision or school safety procedures.
What staff see when creating a pass
When a teacher, school leader, location staff member, or other approved staff member creates a pass, Hall Pass checks for any active Encounter prevention rule.
If the selected student is part of a conflict pair and the other student already has an active pass, staff will see a warning in the Create pass panel.
The warning explains that the student is currently subject to an active Encounter prevention rule that may prevent the pass from being created.
Teacher override setting
Admins can decide whether staff are allowed to override Encounter prevention warnings.
If teacher override is turned on:
Staff will see the Encounter prevention warning.
Staff can use their judgment and choose whether to continue creating the pass.
This may be helpful when staff know the student is supervised, going to a different area, or has permission to leave.
If teacher override is turned off:
Staff will see the Encounter prevention warning.
Staff will not be able to create the pass.
The student must wait until the active pass for the other student has ended, or follow the school’s normal process for staff-supervised movement.
What students see
If a student tries to create a pass and an active Encounter prevention rule applies, they will not be able to complete the pass request.
The student will see a message that says they are unable to create the pass and should speak with a teacher if they need to leave.
Students are not shown the details of the conflict pair.
What to do when a pass is blocked
If a student needs to leave but the pass is blocked:
- Ask the student to speak with a teacher or staff member.
- Check whether the other student in the conflict pair currently has an active pass.
- Follow your school’s process for supervised movement.
- If teacher override is enabled, staff can decide whether it is appropriate to create the pass.
- If teacher override is not enabled, wait until the active pass has ended or follow your school’s safety procedure.

Review conflict pairs regularly to make sure they are still accurate.
Use Encounter prevention alongside school behavior, safety, and supervision procedures.
Create separate conflict pairs when a student needs to be kept apart from more than one other student.
Limit setup access to the staff members responsible for student safety or Hall Pass administration.
