Hāpara no longer auto-creates class Google Groups when classes are created or updated via the roster loader.
Administrator setup and teacher workflows will remain the same.
Additionally, teachers can continue emailing a class using the Email class button on the Class Info tab in Hāpara. A Google Group is not required to email the class.
What is changing with Hāpara class rosters and Google Groups?
- Hāpara’s class roster load process will not create class Google Groups in your Google Workspace directory.
- Google Workspace Admins can still create Google Groups if your school requires them for other purposes.
Why are we making this change to Hāpara class rostering?
Hāpara was created over a decade ago to help teachers when Google Apps for Education did not have many management tools. Creating Google Groups at that time was critical to Hāpara functionality, but with feature updates and improvements to Google, there are no longer critical dependencies on Google Group creation.
- Google’s education tools have evolved, so Hāpara no longer depends on auto-created Google Groups.
- Many customers reported directory clutter from automatically created class groups.
- Removing background group creation simplifies administration without reducing Hāpara functionality.
What does this change to Google Group creation mean for administrators?
There is no change to roster loading or updates.
No action is required in Hāpara.
If your district needs Google Groups for non-Hāpara workflows, your Google Workspace Admin can create them as needed.
You can delete Hāpara-created class groups. These are suffixed by the school year, such as -2324, or -2024.
Note: We do not recommend deleting Google groups prefixed with "td.". These may still be in use by Hāpara systems until further notice.
How teachers can email their class in Hāpara without Google Groups
Open Hāpara and go to the class.
Open the Class Info tab.
Select Email class.
Your email opens with:
– Teachers in the “To:” field
– Students in the “BCC:” field (to protect privacy)Write your message and send.
Additional tips
If you previously relied on auto-created Google Groups for distribution lists, ask your Google Workspace Admin about creating groups that you still need outside of Hāpara.
For parent/guardian communication, follow your school’s approved channels and privacy policies.
Consider classroom norms for email (subject lines, response windows, and reply-all etiquette).
