Self-Service Setup – Step 3: Configure Hāpara Highlights (Screens) monitoring Follow
This article helps administrators enable Hāpara Highlights (Screens) and set privacy controls so teachers can monitor student browsing during school hours.
In this article:
Summary
To turn on Hāpara Highlights (Screens), set your Student Privacy controls (school days/hours and IP restrictions).
Then toggle Enable Highlights to Yes in Settings > Highlights (Screens).
We strongly recommend adding your school/public IP ranges so Hāpara Highlights only runs on school networks. (Pre-Setup Step 2 installs the student extension.)
Steps to Follow
Open Hāpara Highlights settings.
In the Hāpara Admin Console, go to Settings > Highlights (Screens).-
Review the Enable Highlights toggle.
You’ll see Enable Highlights set to No (greyed out) until you finish privacy settings below. Leaving it off hides the Highlights tab for teachers until you’re ready. -
Set Student Privacy controls.
Scroll to Student Privacy and set:School monitoring days (e.g., Mon–Fri)
School monitoring hours (e.g., 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.)
-
Add school network IP restrictions (recommended).
Click Edit under IP address restrictions, enter your public IPs/CIDR ranges, then Save. When set, Highlights only collects activity on those networks; off-network activity isn’t visible.
The page warns about risks when no IP is set.
-
Enable Highlights for teachers.
Scroll back to the top and switch Enable Highlights to Yes. Teachers will now see the Highlights tab. -
Confirm the Chrome extension is deployed.
Ensure the Highlights extension is pushed to student OUs (covered in Pre-Setup). Without it, students won’t appear in Highlights.
Additional tips
Rollout timing: Turn on Highlights after you verify days, hours and IPs to avoid unintended monitoring windows.
Multiple sites? Add all school public IP ranges (district office, satellite campuses).
Privacy by design: On personal/home networks, the extension won’t report activity if IP restrictions are set.
When you are ready, please navigate to the next portion of your Hāpara setup which will cover data loading options.
