What should I do if "Share files" doesn't seem to be working correctly?
Why "Share files" may not work properly in Teacher Dashboard
The file was shared only to some students instead of the whole class.
You see an error such as “There was a problem sharing documents. Please try again.”
A subject folder is missing from a student’s Google Drive.
A student subject folder was renamed or moved.
How to reset class folders in Hāpara
First, try resetting class folders in Hāpara. This repairs the link between your class and student folders.
1. On the Manage Classes page in Hāpara, click on the three dots in the class tile. > Select View class info.
2. Next, on the top right-hand side, click the three dots to open the drop-down menu. > Select Reset folders.
After resetting folders, try using Share files again.
Why doesn't my file appear in the student tiles after I shared it with my students?
Your file may not show in student tiles in Teacher Dashboard for these common reasons:
1. A slight delay in Google's recognition
Google does not always update instantly.
Wait a few moments, then refresh Teacher Dashboard.
Check again to see if the file now appears in student tiles.
2. The file was shared as “View only” or “Comment only”
Student tiles only show files that students can edit.
If you shared the file as read-only or read-comment, it will not appear in student tiles.
If students need to edit the file, change the sharing permissions to “Can edit,” then refresh Teacher Dashboard.
Note: Even if a file is read-only or comment-only, you can still find it by clicking the Drive button at the top of Teacher Dashboard. This allows you to view all documents in a student’s Google Drive.
3. Student subject folders were moved or renamed
Student subject folders must stay in the root of each student’s Google Drive and must not be renamed.
If a student moves or renames these folders, the connection to your class can break and files may not appear in student tiles.
Use “Reset folders” for the class (see the section above) to repair the folder structure.
Why are the "Share files" buttons incorrectly aligned or unresponsive?
Browser extension and toolbar interference
Browser extensions or toolbars can interfere with how Share files appears and behaves. This can cause:
Buttons to be misaligned
Buttons to appear but not respond when clicked
Parts of the Share files panel to be hidden
Troubleshoot extensions and browser issues
Try using an incognito/private window with all extensions disabled.
If Share files works correctly there, an extension is likely causing the issue.
Turn extensions off one by one in your regular browser window to find the extension causing the conflict.
Remove or permanently disable the problematic extension for teachers.
Note: Internet Explorer’s Compatibility View mode can conflict with Share files. If anyone still uses Internet Explorer, turn off Compatibility View or switch to a supported browser such as Google Chrome. Hāpara strongly recommends using Chrome.
Why can't I select a file? / My file selector pop-up is blocked
In Chrome, pop-ups are blocked by default. The Share files file picker opens in a pop-up. If it is blocked, you may not be able to select a file.
How to allow pop-ups for Hāpara
Look at the right side of your Chrome address bar for the Pop-up blocked icon.
Click the pop-up icon.
Choose the option to always allow pop-ups from app.hapara.com.
Refresh the page and try Share files again.
More information on managing pop-ups in Chrome
For more detailed information on managing pop-ups in Chrome, see Google’s help article about blocking or allowing pop-ups in Chrome.
Why am I receiving the "401 not authorized" error?
If you see a “401 not authorized” error when selecting a file in Share files, it usually means there is a Google account or browser session conflict.
Try these fixes in order:
-
Remove extra Google accounts.
Go to the Google account management login page.
Sign out of all accounts.
Sign back in only with your school Google account that is used with Hāpara.
2. Clear browsing data.
Clear your browser’s cookies and cache.
Close all browser windows, then open a new window and sign in again.
3. Allow pop-ups from app.hapara.com.
Follow the steps in the pop-up section above to make sure pop-ups are allowed for Hāpara.
4. Update or change your browser.
Make sure you are using the latest version of your browser.
If you are using a browser other than Google Chrome, try using Chrome to see if the error continues.
5. Sign out and back in.
Sign out of your Google account in the browser.
Close the browser, reopen it, and sign in again with your school account.
If you still receive the “401 not authorized” error after trying all of the above steps, contact Hāpara Support. Submit a request and include details about your browser, device and when the error appears.
Additional tips
If multiple teachers report Share files issues in the same class, an administrator should confirm that the class sync is healthy and that folders have not been bulk-changed in Google Drive.
Encourage students not to rename or move Hāpara-created subject folders.
For ongoing issues, take a screenshot of any error message and share it with your IT administrator or Hāpara Support.
