Deploy Hāpara Highlights extension for Microsoft ID sign-in (Windows 10/11 via Intune: Chrome + Edge) Follow
This article helps Admins force-install the Hāpara Highlights extension on managed Windows devices and ensure students can sign in using their Microsoft 365 school account in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

Admins
Summary
To support Microsoft ID sign-in in Chrome and Edge, deploy the Highlights extension using an Intune Settings catalog profile, then add the Highlights entry to ExtensionInstallForcelist so the extension installs silently and stays up to date.
What you’ll need
- Microsoft 365 tenant with Intune (Endpoint Manager) enabled
- Windows 10/11 devices using Microsoft Edge (Chromium) and/or Google Chrome
- Admin permissions to create and assign configuration profiles in Intune
Steps to follow
1) Create a Settings catalog profile (Windows)
- In the Microsoft Intune admin center, go to Devices → Manage Devices → Configuration → Policies → Create → New Policy
Set:
- Platform: Windows 10 and later
- Profile type: Settings catalo
2) Add the browser extension policy settings
- In Configuration settings, open the Settings picker.
2. For Google Chrome, search for Google Chrome → Chrome Extensions and add:
- Configure the list of force-installed apps and extensions
- Configure the list of force-installed apps and extensions (User)
3. For Microsoft Edge, add the equivalent Extensions settings so you can configure the force-install list for Edge as well.
3) Configure ExtensionInstallForcelist (force-install Highlights)
Add the Highlights entry in the required format: <extension_id>;<update_url>
Copy/paste this value:
aceopacgaepdcelohobicpffbbejnfac;https://storage.googleapis.com/hapara-extensions/extension-next/updates-b.xml
This enforces silent installation and auto-updates from the update feed.
4) Assign and deploy
- (Optional) Configure Scope tags.
- In Assignments, add the groups/users/devices to apply the policy.
3. Select Review + Create.
Note: Intune writes equivalent registry keys; Chrome/Edge enforce them on the next policy refresh or browser restart.
5) Verify installation + Microsoft ID sign-in
- On a targeted device, open Edge or Chrome → Menu → Extensions and confirm Hāpara Highlights is installed and enabled.
2. Ensure the student signs in using their Microsoft 365 school account.
3. Launch a Hāpara-enabled class and confirm Highlights connects the student to the teacher dashboard.
Additional tips
- Account type matters: Only school/organization Microsoft accounts are supported. Personal email domains (for example, outlook.com/hotmail.com/gmail.com) are blocked by the extension’s authentication logic.
- If the extension doesn’t appear after deployment, have the device check in to Intune, then restart the browser to trigger policy refresh.
