We’re excited that you’re learning with Hāpara Workspace this school year! It will be your digital home base for the lessons, projects and units your teacher assigns.
In Hāpara Workspace, your teacher will share individual Workspaces with you. A Workspace is one lesson, project or unit.
In a Workspace, you’ll find:
- All of your lesson, project or unit information
- Resource links that help you learn
- Activities to help you practice
- Assessments to help your teacher understand how much you’ve learned
When you use Workspace, you don’t have to dig through your backpack or folders to find your assignments or information about learning activities. Instead, nothing gets lost, and you can stay organized and on top of your work.
Why is my class using Workspace?
Your class is using Workspace because each student can work at their own pace through a learning path that is created just for them. You can also use Workspace at school, home, a friend’s house, a soccer field, a dance studio or anywhere you want to learn. Plus, you can visit Workspace any time — not just during class time. It makes it easy for you to learn the way you want.
How do I start using Workspace?
1. Log in through Google Chrome with your school-issued information.
2. Visit https://app.hapara.com/student.
3. Click Workspaces on the left (from a computer) or on the bottom of your screen (from a phone).
4. Then in the list that appears, click on the Workspace you want to view.
Note: You can also click All my classes at the top and select one class. This will show you Workspaces only for that class.
What introductory information does Workspace include?
Workspace has all of the information you need for a lesson, project or unit. Here’s what you’ll see on the left-hand side.
Description
The description tells you what the Workspace will cover overall. Other teachers who want to use the Workspace with their own classes can read this description, too.
Groups
This section shows you which groups you’ve been assigned to for the Workspace. Your teacher may include resources in the Workspace that are only for your group. Or you may have learning activities assigned to your group so you and the other students can work together.
Due dates
If your Workspace has activities with due dates, you’ll see them listed in this section. This helps you keep track of when you need to complete assignments or assessments.
Classes
This section lists which class your Workspace was assigned to.
Teachers
This section displays which teacher or co-teachers assigned the Workspace. The teacher or teachers who are listed will be able to view your completed work and leave you feedback to help you learn.
What are Workspace cards?
Cards are the main part of a Workspace. Each rectangular card has learning information, resource links or learning activities.
The cards are organized in columns. Each column has a different type of Workspace card to keep information, resources and activities separated and organized for you. This allows you to see everything at once or focus on one part of a Workspace.
Card columns
Workspace Column 1
The first column shows you goals for the Workspace. This is what you’re expected to learn by the end of the Workspace or by the time you complete one step of the Workspace.
Your teacher may label this card column as “Goals,” “Learning Targets,” “Objectives” or another name related to learning expectations.
Workspace Column 2
The second column has cards with all the resources you need for learning. In the cards, your teacher may add links to articles, videos, audio clips, images or other digital resources.
Some teachers may even allow you to decide which resources you want to click and use.
Your teacher may label this column as “Resources,” “Learning Resources” or a similar name.
Workspace Column 3
The third column has cards with your learning activities, such as assignments or assessments. This is where you complete work to practice skills or show your teacher what you’ve learned.
Your teacher may label this column as “Learning Activities,” “Evidence,” “To Do” or another name related to work you need to complete.
Workspace Column 4
The fourth column is optional for your teacher to include. This column may have cards with rubrics to help you understand expectations for assignments or assessments. Or your teacher may share challenge activities to spark your curiosity.
If it’s included, your teacher may label this column as “Rubrics,” “Challenge,” “Learn More” or another name.
Card sections/rows
Your teacher may also decide to add sections/rows to the cards in your Workspace. This helps you keep track of where you are in the Workspace so you can work at your own pace.
For example, your teacher may add card sections based on steps in a lesson.
Example 1:
Another example is when a teacher creates card sections for different days of the week. That way you know when to complete a section or can catch up when you’re absent from school.
Example 2:
How do I submit work in Workspace?
Learning activity cards
In the third column, you’ll see the learning activities you need to complete.
To begin working on an assignment or assessment, click Start at the bottom of the card. The activity will open in a new tab.
When you’re finished and ready to turn in your work, go back to the Workspace card and click Submit at the bottom.
You’ll then see a checkmark and the word Submitted appear in green. This lets you know that you turned in your work to your teacher. It also helps you easily manage your assignments and assessments.
Feedback from your teacher
In Workspace, you can also clearly see when your teacher has given you credit for your assignment or assessment. This helps you keep track of what you’ve completed or not.
Once the activity has been assessed, you’ll see a green checkmark and the word Assessed on the card. You’ll also see a score if your teacher has given you points for the activity.
On the other hand, your teacher may leave you feedback in the file and want you to work on it again.
In this case, the activity card will show the word Started, and the Submit button will appear again.
How do I add my own cards in Workspace?
Workspace also allows you to be more involved in your learning. If your teacher gives you the option, you can add your own cards to Workspace.
Did you come across a great video or article you want to share with your teacher and other students? In the second column, you can add your own resource card with links or a file from your device or Google Drive. Afterward, your teacher and the other students who’ve been assigned to the Workspace will see your card.
Or maybe you have a Google file you want to add to showcase your learning. You can also add a card to the third column of the Workspace.
To add your own Workspace card:
1. Find Column 2 or Column 3. Be sure you’re also in the right section if your teacher added card sections to the Workspace.
2. Click the + button.
3. Type a title for your Workspace card.
4. Then type a description that explains what you’re sharing.
5. Click the arrow to add a file from your device. Or click the Google Drive logo to add a file from your Drive. Click the link button to add a website link instead.
You can also click Create New to start a new Google Doc, Sheet, Slide or Drawing.
6. Then click Done to add the card to the Workspace.
7. If you need to make an edit or you want to delete the card, click the three dots to open the card menu. > Then click Edit or Delete.
How do I collaborate in Workspace?
Another benefit of Workspace is that you can collaborate with a group, the class or with students in other classes, if your teacher sets it up that way.
As mentioned, you can add your own cards to a Workspace for other students to use.
Your teacher may also assign a learning activity to a group or classes. This may be a shared Google Doc, Sheet, Slide or Drawing.
To collaborate with other students on an activity:
1. Click Start at the bottom of a group assignment or assessment card.
2. The shared file will then open up in a new tab on your screen.
3. You and the other students can work on the file at the same time. Your teacher may also leave feedback in the file for all of you to see.
4. When you’re finished collaborating, each student needs to click Submit at the bottom of the card.
Can I use Workspace on my phone?
Yes, you can use Workspace on your phone! In fact, Workspace works well and displays nicely on any device. Because it works on any device, you can complete your learning activities anywhere, at any time.
