Optional features overview
In Hāpara Highlights, there are a few optional features that can be turned on or off, depending on the needs of your teachers and the pedagogical beliefs of your school/district.
Whether or not you use these features should be discussed with your instructional leadership team.
Pause Screens
When Pause Screens is enabled, teachers are able to lock the browser screens for their entire class or individual students.
While Pause Screens is activated, students see the message below and are not able to navigate to any websites.
For more on how teachers activate Pause Screens and what they see, see this article.
How to enable Pause Screens
In the Hāpara Admin console, navigate to Modules. You should be taken to the Highlights Settings page.
Scroll to the bottom of the page to the Optional Features section. Tick the box next to Enable Pause Screens in Highlights. You will need to set a maximum amount of time teachers can pause screens for - 5, 10 or 15 minutes. Click Save changes at the bottom of the page.
Provide reasons for closing tabs
In Highlights, teachers can close students' tabs at any time. When you enable the Provide Reasons feature, teachers will have to select a reason from a list before the tab is closed. Enabling this feature encourages teachers to be more thoughtful about when they are closing tabs. It also provides students with more context for why their tab is being closed.
Students will see the reason in the tab in place of the website they were previously viewing.
How to enable provide reasons for closing tabs
In the Hāpara Admin console, navigate to Modules. You should be taken to the Highlights Settings page.
Scroll to the bottom of the page to the Optional Features section. Tick the box next to Enable reasons for closing tabs in Highlights. You will need to provide up to four reasons for teachers to choose from by typing them in the boxes provided. Two suggested reasons are pre-populated. When you are done, click Save changes.
Disable screenshots
With Highlights, teachers can view screenshots of what students are looking at in the Current Screens tab and by taking Snaps in the Activity Viewer.
In some instances, especially when students are learning remotely, you may want teachers to be able to monitor student browsing but not view exactly what appears on students' screens.
How to disable screenshots
To disable Current Screens and Snaps, in the Hāpara Admin console, navigate to Modules. You should be taken to the Highlights Settings page.
Scroll down to the Bandwidth Control section. Where it says Screenshots, untick the boxes next to Enable screenshots and Enable ongoing screenshots.
This will remove the Current Screens and Snaps tabs in Highlights. Teachers can continue to use all other Highlights features, including using Browser Tabs and Activity Viewer to see which wesites students are accessing.
