Overview
Review the following Google Workspace settings within the Google Admin Console to prevent students from bypassing the web filter.
Disallow users from managing certificates
To prevent students from going to chrome://settings/certificates and removing the trust from Amazon and Starfield Certificates, please complete the following steps.
- Devices > Chrome > Settings > Users and browsers
- Select the Organizational Unit that has the filter extension
- Find the + Search or add filter and type "user management" to display both "User management of installed CA certificates" AND "User management of installed client certificates" settings.
- Change both to "Disallow users from managing certificates."
- Click on the Save button in the upper right corner.
Disable Omnibox search
The Omnibox is similar to the traditional web browser address bar, but you can use it like a search engine without having to return to the Google web page to make new searches.
This means that Google has the ability to be present in every query you make on your browser as shown below.
Consider disabling the Google Search functionality in the side panel to keep students from avoiding the web filter.
- Devices > Chrome > Settings > Users and browsers
- Select the Organizational Unit that has the filter extension
- Find the + Search or add filter and type "side panel" to display the side panel search history setting, found under the category of "Omnibox search provider."
- Select the option to "Disable showing the most recent Google Search results in a browser side panel" which will keep students from searching through the side panel within their Chrome browser.
- Click Save in the upper right corner to apply the change.
